Dear Friends and Colleagues.
Here we are in May 2020 the world sheltering in place and struggling to combat the plague. It feels in some ways that we have entered a Brechtian dark age again and look to the future to understand us with kindness. May we all emerge soon with a vaccine and the end of the epidemic.
In the midst of the turmoil and upheaval as we stay in our homes and some continue to work, the language of silence must be met also by our communication and continuation with scholarship and learning from history.
I am sending out two lists with the hope that you feel able to go through them and perhaps find some tomes of interest.
This is being sent on Lag Ba’Omer when a plague raged among the disciples of the great sage Rabbi Akiva (teacher of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai) and ended today.
The holiday carries the theme of loving and being respectful of all life.
May we continue on our journeys with renewed reverence for all life.

The period covered is very brief — from the burning of the Reichstag in Berlin on through the period following the election of Hitler. Remarkably objective approach to difficult subject. PAP, KÁROLY (1897–1945), Hungarian author. Born in Sopron, where his father Miksa *Pollák was the rabbi of the Neolog community, Pap was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I and was decorated for bravery. After demobilization, he joined Béla *Kun’s October Revolution and became a Hungarian Red Army commander. On the collapse of the revolution he was arrested, reduced to the ranks, and condemned to 18 months’ imprisonment. After his release he left the country until 1925. Then, settling in Budapest, he began writing poetry and stories. He soon became known as a short story writer, but wishing to remain independent, he refused to take any employment. During World War II the Budapest Jewish Theater performed two biblical plays by Pap: Bathsheba (1940) and Moses (1944). In May 1944 he was sent to a labor camp. From there he refused to escape and was deported to Buchenwald, and is presumed to have died in Bergen-Belsen. (257267) $55.00

Concerns efforts to free Russian Jewry, focuses on Leningrad trial and their work and letters to free her and others.. Filled with documents. Sylva was born in Riga in 1944 into a traditional Jewish family. In 1970, she and two of her brothers were among 16 valiant souls, from different parts of the Soviet Union, who planned to take an empty plane from an airfield (they had their own pilot) and fly it to Sweden, in order for the world to hear that Jews were suffering in the Soviet Union and wanted to imigrate to Israel. If the plan had gone according to schedule, the plane would have been abandoned at its destination, and returned to the Soviet Union by the Swedes.However, the plane never took off. The group learned that the KGB knew of their plan, but although the penalty could mean labour camp or even death, they sacrificed themselves and went ahead anyway, in order to get their day in court, where they knew their words would reach out from behind the “Iron curtain” to the free world. She and her colleagues each gave an impassioned plea at the trial and Sylva ended hers by proudly proclaiming “If I forget thee oh Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its cunning”. She received a ten year sentence. However, because of their bravery Soviet Jews did indeed start to receive exit visas.Sylva spent four years in a labour camp in indescribable conditions. She was released in 1974 in an exchange of’spies’ and came straight to Israel. She works as a mechanical engineer.Having always had a natural artistic talent, she became seriously interested in painting through the encouragement of knowledgeable friends. Her art has been honed by great teachers. Portraits are her genre, whether from real life, imagination, or photographs. She is a member of the “Painters and Sculptors Association of Israel”. In a German uniform he escapes to the Eastern Ukraine where he wanders for several months from town to town. Captured by the Gestapo, he is shipped to Buchenwald where he survives as a Pole.
