Wolf Heidenheim (1757–1832), a scholar, translator, and commentator on Jewish liturgy, shaped the development of the Roedelheim mahzor for the first three decades of the 19th century. Upon founding his publishing house in Roedelheim in 1799, the mahzor was one of the first books he printed. Its continuous publication became a life-long project for Heidenheim, one through which he contributed to the preservation of Jewish traditions as well as to their rejuvenation. Heidenheim was the first publisher who reviewed old manuscripts and texts to correct errors that had been passed on in the mahzor. He also removed those piyyutim, Jewish liturgical poems recited on holidays, that were no longer understood. Typographic layout and outward appearance of the books were another aspect Heidenheim transformed: Over time, the books included more decorative embellishments.(from Leo Baeck Institute)  (267742) $175.00

The most important work by Holdheim appeared under the title Die Autonomie der Rabbinen,. In this work he pleads for the abolition of the antiquated Jewish marriage and divorce regulations mainly on the ground that the Jews do not constitute a political nation. The Jewish religious institutions must be rigidly kept distinct from the Jewish national ones, to which latter belong the laws of marriage and divorce. The laws of the modern states are not in conflict with the principles of the Jewish religion; therefore these modern laws, and not the Jewish national laws of other days, should regulate Jewish marriages and divorces (see Samuel Hirsch in Orient. Lit., 1843, No. 44). The importance of this book is attested by the stir it created among German Jewish communities, many members of which found in its attitude the solution of the problem of how loyalty to Judaism could be combined with unqualified allegiance to their German nationality. In his Ueber die Beschneidung he takes the position that circumcision is not, like baptism, a sacrament of initiation, but is merely a command like any other. Nevertheless he classifies it not as a national but as a Jewish religious law, and pleads for its retention. (from the JE)  (267927) $125.00

He married Sophie, youngest daughter of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch of Frankfurt, in 1876, and soon after accepted the rabbinate of Pápa in Hungary. His father-in-law died in December 1888, and Breuer succeeded him as the Rabbi of the Frankfurt Austrittsgemeinde (secessioned community) in 1890.[In Frankfurt he participated in the Freie Vereinigung, a national organisation of Orthodox communities, and created its rabbinical representative body, the Verband der orthodoxen Rabbiner Deutschlands . He would later also be one of the founding members of Agudas Yisroel, and was a strong opponent of political Zionism; he viewed participation in the Zionist movement as an implicit approval of the idea that a Jewish state can replace Jewish religious identity.[As part of his duties in Frankfurt was Jewish education, and he opened a yeshiva, the Torah Lehranstalt, in 1893, which he modeled after the yeshivot he had attended in Hungary.[Little of Breuer’s work remains in writing (Wikipedia)  (260426) $45.00
